An Asian woman was the victim of a racist tirade by a passenger on a subway because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Elen Chen began filming the offensive remarks when another man stepped in to defend her on the train in New York City.
The passenger can be heard shouting, ‘You’re Chinese, why did you bring corona to America.’
He then becomes irate when he realizes the interaction is being filmed and begins walking after Chen with his cane raised. The clip ends without showing how the tense altercation ended.
‘Luckily, no one got hurt,’ Chen said, giving thanks to the passenger who stepped in to help.
*Disclaimer* … I’m still trying to calm down, but wanted to share with you all: please be careful and if you see this happen to someone, please don’t just sit there and do NOTHING! I am so thankful that ONE person spoke up for me. If not, who knows what would have happened. I would have gone HULK on the mta subway!!!!I sat down on the train, making sure to have a lot social distancing. Trains are pretty empty anyways. Man sits RIGHT IN front of me and tries to get my attention ‘HELLO HELLO, TAKE OFF YOUR HEADPHONES… I say “good morning”.He says ‘You’re Chinese, why did you bring Corona to America?’ I reply: “I am just trying to get home, just like you… Please leave me alone”… I also knew that I had to get up and walk away because he was blabbering other things that I was not listening to.He proceeded to follow me but an UPSTANDER came to my rescue and got his attention; told him to stop bothering me and that we are all trying to get home. This is what I was able to record. Even writing this down makes me really angry and disappointed in the people just sitting there, not doing anything. Luckily, no one was hurt. This isn’t any time to BLAME others or find some reason to hurt others. Be an upstander.~Please share and if you happen to recognize the awesome dude that spoke up for me, let me know <3
The incident comes as New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio addressed a rise in ‘unacceptable’ xenophobic discrimination against Asian communities.
Earlier this month, a man was caught on camera spraying an Asian train passenger with Febreze air freshener.
The man was heard shouting ‘I don’t want him under me! Tell him to move,’ before spraying in the direction of the passenger for about 15 seconds.
Last week, the New York City Human Rights Commission said it is probing five instances of coronavirus-fueled racism that occurred over the last two weeks, according to the New York Post.
One of the instances saw a 59-year-old man tell police that a teenager kicked him to the ground while screaming ‘Fucking Chinese coronavirus,’ before spitting in his face.
Another case involved a woman in Midtown who punched an unmasked Asian woman in the face while shouting ‘Where is your corona mask, you Asian bitch?’
Authorities are also investigating a man who repeatedly harassed an Asian man and his 10-year-old son in Queens.
Governor Andrew Cuomo also commented in the uptick in racially-motivated attacks and said he was ‘disgusted’ by the Midtown incident, which he said was ‘apparently motivated by the bigoted notion that an Asian person is more likely to carry or transmit the novel coronavirus.’
Donald Trump has been criticized for repeatedly referring to coronavirus as ‘the Chinese virus.’ The disease caused by coronavirus was officially named Covid-19 by the World Health Organization last month.
