Ahead of last weekend’s new episode, Beth star Kelly Reilly opened up about her dynamic with Yellowstone newcomer Carter (played by Finn Little). Despite future husband Rip Wheeler’s (Cole Hauser) protests, Beth seems determined to adopt the young ranch hand as her own, but the Paramount drama is nothing if not unpredictable.
Carter could exit the series sooner than expected following some troubling comments from series regular Kelly.
Unable to have children of their own, Beth and Rip have been taking a tough-love approach to looking after Yellowstone’s youngest ranch hand.
After her brutally honest discussion with the teenage cowboy in episode three, Beth is considering whether she may have bitten off more than she can chew.
As the new instalment continues, she and her fiance Rip could realise they’re not ready to raise a kid of their own, even though he’s not their flesh and blood.
Kelly admitted to TVLine: “I don’t think that she knows she doesn’t have the skill set for it.
“She doesn’t even know any children other than [nephew] Tate.”
The son of Kayce (Luke Grimes) and Monica (Kelsey Asbille), Tate (Brecken Merrill) has grown up exposed to the ranch’s reputation for violence and bloodshed.
Plus, Beth has been absent as an aunt, more concerned as she is with handling Yellowstone’s considerable finances.
Beth may believe she can do anything she puts her mind towards, but parenting wayward teen Carter is something she couldn’t possibly be ready for.
As Kelly explained: “She knows how to destroy, but does she know how to nurture, how to take care of something?”
Carter’s insubordinate attitude and foul-mouth has already put Beth’s to shame and may cause her to reconsider the undertaking in the long run.
“There’s something about Carter that pushes her buttons in a way that nothing ever has,” the actress continued.

“I don’t know that she feels she’s actually capable of [parenting him] or if she thinks she’d be any good at it. She’s not a Disney character.”
Their moments together in episode three, All I See Is You, made it clear to Beth that taking care of Carter won’t be an easy task.
She was even accused of child abuse when a woman witnessed her wrestling a pricey cowboy shirt off of him, prompting her to smash her phone and threaten the woman into leaving.
Carter was subsequently given a stark life lesson from her new guardian as Beth revealed the four ways people make money; inherit it, steal it, or outwork everyone else.
When asked the fourth, Beth responded: “Learn how to suck a d**k like you lost your car keys in it.”
She admittedly started to soften to the boy when Carter asked if she earned her millions in the same way; truly a Beth Dutton-inspired response.
However, Kelly warned: “[Taking care of Carter] is probably one of the most challenging things that Beth is going to encounter in her life.”
Furthermore, Rip has already rejected the idea of calling Carter their son, claiming there’s no way he could be a replacement for the real thing.
Could raising Carter prove too much for the complicated couple? Or will Yellowstone’s newest ranch hand prove he’s got what it takes to stick around?
Yellowstone season 4 continues Sundays on Paramount.
