Katie McGlynn will be on the sofa with hosts Tim Lovejoy and Simon Rimmer this morning, Sunday, July 18, on Channel 4’s Sunday Brunch. The former Coronation Street actress will be talking about what she’s got next in the pipeline, including her recent debut in Hollyoaks as Becky Quentin. But what was the real reason behind McGlynn leaving her life on the cobbles behind?
Why did Katie McGlynn leave Coronation Street?
McGlynn portrayed Beth Tinker’s (played by Lisa George) niece Sinead for six years and it seemed she was going to get her happily ever after.
Sinead was in a long-term relationship with Chesney Brown (Sam Aston) but then later went off with Daniel Osbourne (Rob Mallard) who she went on to marry.
They had baby Bertie together but it was during her pregnancy that they discovered she had cervical cancer.
The year-long storyline saw Sinead and Daniel go through heartbreak until she died in October 2019.
The 27-year-old had portrayed Sinead for six years but it was actually her decision to leave.
According to OK! magazine, McGlynn asked Coronation Street bosses two years prior to her exit if she could go because she hadn’t been given a “decent story”.
So after explaining how she felt, the writers decided to give her a memorable exit.
Despite being an emotional ending, McGlynn said she was “really pleased” with how Sinead’s story ended.
McGlynn explained: “I said we should finish with the saddest ending because life’s not a fairy tale.
“I’ve been affected by people in my family who had cancer and I wanted to showcase that.
“I think a soap should reflect real life. I’m saddened that I’m leaving, but I want to create awareness.
“I’m so grateful for this storyline, it’s like a nice big springboard to jump off rather than leaving in a taxi.
“If I’m going to go, I want to go with a bang!”

Since leaving Coronation Street, McGlynn featured in the latest season of BBC lottery drama The Syndicate.
She played Georgina, the ex-girlfriend of one of the characters with who she had a child.
Most recently though, McGlynn was Becky in Hollyoaks, who was introduced as a friend of Diane Hutchinson’s (Alex Fletcher).
The two women gave birth on the same day and so bonded in the hospital.
After Sinead died, Daniel did have a brief relationship with sex worker Kimberly.
He managed to help her start a new life by giving her some money so she was no longer in debt.
Since then, there haven’t been any big storylines for Daniel but could there be a new love of his life just around the corner?
Coronation Street airs three nights a week on ITV.
