Death in Paradise fans are excited for the festive special to air on BBC One on Boxing Day. This will be followed by the 11th instalment of the detective drama, which is due to air later in 2022. Viewers were shocked to hear fan-favourite character Officer Dwayne Myers (played by Danny John-Jules) would be making a comeback tonight.

Why did Danny John-Jules leave Death in Paradise?

The 11th season of the escapist drama is in the making and a whole host of new regulars have been added to the cast.

They include Tamzin Outhwaite, Nicholas Bailey, Jason Done, Ben Onwuke and Ben Starr to name a few.

Comedy and drama will be woven together once more, as the season 10 finale saw DI Neville Parker (Ralf Little) open up to colleague Florence Cassell (Joséphine Jobert).

He was about to confess his love and fans will find out what happens next during the upcoming Christmas special.

Another familiar face returning to Saint Marie for the festive episode is charismatic Officer Dwayne Myers.

Actor John-Jules left the series back in 2018, following a seven-year stint as the fan-favourite character.

At the time of leaving, he said he was keen to revisit his stage career.

The star said: “I left Death in Paradise because I wanted to get back on stage.

“I needed a bit more razzmatazz in my life, and then along came Strictly!”

He took part in the 2018 series of Strictly Come Dancing, having been partnered with Amy Dowden, and was eliminated in week eight.

Why is Danny John-Jules returning to Death in Paradise?

The festive special will raise the question of whether Neville and Florence can handle the aftermath of their awkward exchange.

Neville may struggle to keep his well-ordered life on track, and another obstacle is thrown in his way with the unexpected visit of his sister, Izzy (Kate O’Flynn).

The synopsis for the Christmas episode says: “A feature-length special to conclude the anniversary celebrations, which stretches from a grey, damp and drizzly London all the way to the sparkling beauty of idyllic Saint Marie.

“A wealthy shipping magnate is found dead at a Christmas party. Things get stranger when a man in London receives a mysterious Christmas card connected to the victim’s death.”

What role Dwayne Myers will have in this is yet to be discovered.

The festive 90-minute special will see guest stars Mathew Baynton, Juliet Stevenson, Jocelyn Jee Esien, Anthony Calf and Stanley Townsend make an appearance.

The official Instagram account for actor Danny shared a video update, saying: “Dwayne Myers and his dad are in London again working on the #DeathInParadiseChristmasSpecial.

“When ‘The Cat’ meets a ‘Pork Pie’ you can expect fireworks. If y’all good, I might even post the whole ‘Bacanal Of Joviality’ otherwise known as ‘The Full Video’.#YoureWonderingNow”

The Christmas special will be followed by season 11 later in the New Year.

The BBC said of the new series: “When a skydiver dies, apparently stabbed mid-air, the case seems impossible to crack.

“A murder on a golf course, a killer at a concert, a mysterious case at a rehab clinic all challenge the team’s unique expertise in series 11.”

At the same time, Florence faces a tough decision when asked by the Commissioner to go undercover to solve a drug trafficking case on another island.

Fans took to Instagram to express their excitement over Danny’s return, with melgs08 saying: “So glad you’ll be in the Christmas special. Death in Paradise isn’t the same without you.”

stylecanteen added: “Yessss! Looking forward to this. Missing Dwayne!”
