Vera fans were thrilled when series 11 of the ITV drama made its return on Sunday night. DCI Vera Stanhope (played by Brenda Blethyn) and her right-hand man Aidan Healy (Kenny Doughty) were back investigating the murder of a man who was beaten to death. However, fans quickly became distracted by one character’s appearance.
While Vera and Aiden were out chatting to witnesses and trying to create a picture of what their victim was like, Mark Edwards (Riley Jones) was back in the office doing some background work.
However, when Mark first appeared on screen, viewers became distracted by his new look.
The actor who plays Mark usually dons a head of blonde hair and facial hair.
However, Sunday’s instalment saw the star clean-shaven and shaved head.
Following the episode, Riley thanked his followers for their positive comments about the first episode.
He also addressed the feedback from some fans about his new look.
In view of his 8,000 followers, the actor penned: “My heed made the news!
“Thanks for all the positive comments. Glad you’re digging the new look.” (sic)
The Vera star’s followers were quick to reply, with many complimenting him on his appearance.
“The new look is awesome,” one viewer replied as another said: “You really suit the shaven head and beard!”
A third asked: “Does this new look mean that Mark’s character has blossomed into ‘not fearing’ Vera so much?”
“I love it,” a fourth said. “Looks good on you!”

The first episode of series 11 began with police finding the body of local builder, Jim Tullman, who was found beaten to death on the steps of Tynemouth’s Collingwood Monument.
As Vera and her team got to work, she questioned how a seemingly beloved man could be attacked so viciously.
The mystery deepened further when she discovered Jim was to testify in court as the key witness in a violent assault.
As the beloved detective delved deeper into Jim’s life, she discovered unresolved bitterness between his estranged wife Barbara and doting son John Paul.
However, in true Vera fashion, it didn’t take the detective long to find the culprit of the murder.
The final episode of Vera, which will air on Sunday, will see DCI Stanhope investigating the murder of support worker, Angela Konan.
Angela is found hidden among the bleak woodlands of Northumberland National Park.
Noel Henderson and Stanley Booth, the two park rangers who reported the body, come under Vera’s radar when they start acting suspiciously.
However, along with Aiden, the detective manages to uncover the web of lies, but who will end up being the killer?
Vera returns on Sunday at 8pm on ITV.
