The true story behind the heartbreaking Netflix drama From Scratch

From Scratch has soared into the Top Five most watched on Netflix in the USA and there are plenty of good reasons why. The romantic drama follows the epic love story of American student Amy (played by Zoe Saldaña) and Sicilian chef Lino (Eugenio Mastrandrea), who meet in Italy. The couple falls madly in love with the limited series delving into their relationship throughout the years.

As Netflix fans have dived into From Scratch, they have grown emotionally invested in Amy and Lino.

Viewers have taken to Twitter to share their love for the show and what’s made them fall even more head over heels is knowing that it is based on real life.

From Scratch was inspired by the memoir From Scratch: A Memoir of Love, Sicily, and Finding Home by Tembi Locke.

The limited series was created by Tembi – based on her own experiences – her sister Attica Locke and was produced by Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine production company.

Much like in the show, Tembi moved to Florence in the 1990s as she was studying abroad.

It was here that she met chef Rosario “Saro” Gullo who she went on to have a whirlwind and unexpected romance with.

In one of the early episodes, Lino helped Amy retrieve her stolen bike which did happen in real life.

Tembi told The Today Show that Saro had “a vision of us and greatness so effortlessly that it suddenly seemed as right as butter on bread.

“I was taken aback by his boldness, his certainty.”

She stated that he often said “I think we could be something great” when they first started dating.

There are a few locations in the Netflix series which are connected to where their real love story took place.

The apartment Amy stays in when she meets Lino is located next to Tembi’s real apartment that she stayed in, in the 1990s.

Also, Sloane’s bar that Amy works in is where the real bar that Saro once owned with one of his friends.

While some parts of their romance were dramatised for the show, there was tension in the families.

Similar to Amy and Lino, Tembi and Sara did have to face disapproval of their romance from loved ones.

Saro’s parents didn’t approve of their interracial relationship and didn’t attend their wedding.

He was also diagnosed with a rare form of cancer called leiomyosarcoma in 2002.

He and his parents were only able to reconnect after his diagnosis, years after the wedding.

Tembi travelled to Sicily to write the first draft of From Scratch: A Memoir of Love, Sicily, and Finding Home.

Her sister Attica began writing for the adaptation of Little Fires Everywhere, working for Witherspoon’s production company, when she mentioned Tembi’s book.

At that point, it hadn’t even been published but Hello Sunshine showed its interest in the tragic story early on.

From Scratch is available to watch on Netflix.
