The Real Reason 'Friends' Alum Matthew Perry Joined Instagram

Matthew Perry may be best known for playing Chandler Bing in his sitcom, Friends. Friends was pumping out episodes from 1994 to 2004 and made the show’s stars some of the most well-known and well-paid actors in Hollywood.

Since then, he has acted in a fairly steady stream of films and shows, such as The Odd Couple. After years of being less-than-accessible to fans and the media due to his personal struggles, Perry is beginning to reconnect with the world a little more, and part of that has been finally joining Instagram.

Perry’s character, Chandler Bing, was known for his sarcasm, commitment issues, and having a job no one could ever quite remember. While Chandler eventually overcame his commitment issues and lived happily ever after with his wife, Monica Geller, real-life actor Perry didn’t find such bliss, as he struggled with addiction.

Looking on from a distance, Perry seemed to be on top of the world during his Friends years. But, behind the scenes, he was battling addictions to Vicodin and alcohol. He has spoken publicly in interviews about his struggles with recovery, even admitting to filming the show in a haze for years.

In a 2013 ABC News interview he brought his good friend and addiction counselor along, Earl Hightower. Not unlike his character Chandler, Perry is quick to throw out jokes about his life, but he is also willing to have serious moments.

When asked if being famous made things harder for him, he responded: “It actually ultimately helped me, because I couldn’t just walk into a bar. Everybody in the bar would go ‘You can’t do that. I just read it. You can’t do that.’”

Perry’s health has suffered in more recent years, as well. In 2018, Perry spent three months in the hospital to recover from a ruptured bowel. Now, after years of addiction, fluctuating weight, and other health issues, it seems Perry is finally starting to rediscover his life and his health.

Matthew Perry’s girlfriend Molly Hurwitz encouraged him to join Instagram

Perry is now dating talent manager Molly Hurwitz and has been for some time. Sources close to the star told Us Weekly that they have a loving and healthy relationship and that “nobody can remember seeing Matthew this happy before.”

Sources also told the magazine that Hurwitz is to thank for Perry joining Instagram. The star has been on Twitter for years, mostly sticking to short posts of a line or two and very few photos, but just recently started posting photos on Instagram.

Perry has been on Instagram for less than a month and already has 6.1 million followers.

“This is how thrilled I am to finally be on Instagram. So, here we go…” he captioned his first post, a clip of him dancing from an episode of Friends.

A ‘Friends’ reunion is on its way

Perry was the last of the six stars of friends to join Instagram and his former castmates couldn’t have been more thrilled themselves, posting welcome messages and comments plenty of Friends references to delight fans.

“Finally!!! Yay!! Can’t believe my eyes MY EYES,” Lisa Kudrow writes, a reference to what’s now a popular gif of her character, Phoebe Buffay, unwittingly discovering Monica and Chandler hooking up through Monica’s apartment window.

“I’m shocked Matty is the last to join Instagram, considering he was a uh… umm….oh crap 🤦🏼‍♀️ Oh! A computer processing TRANSPONSTER,” Jennifer Aniston wrote along with her welcome post, a reference to when her character Rachel fails to answer a question about Chandler’s job.

Several of the cast members posted a throw-back promo shot of the cast on February 26th with the simple caption “It’s happening…”

Yes, after many years of Perry especially saying it wouldn’t and shouldn’t happen, there will indeed be a Friends reunion special, set to come out on HBO Max.
