The Blacklist fans were left sobbing with the series eight finale as Liz Keen (played by Megan Boone), was unexpectedly shot in front of Raymond “Red” Reddington (James Spader). Liz is one of the most important characters in the NBC crime thriller as she was the only person Red agreed to work with at the FBI as they had a personal connection. In the latest series, the initial plan was for Liz to kill Red herself but there was a shocking twist which no one expected.

Is Elizabeth Keen really dead?
As Liz guessed, Red was dying and he wanted to ensure both she and her daughter Agnes (Katherine Kell) were safe.
So in order to try and protect them, Red insisted Liz kill him and take over his criminal empire.
This way, Liz would appear as someone not to be messed with as she would have been the one to take down the infamous Red.
She would also get access to his Blacklist which would help the FBI so, reluctantly, Liz agreed.
Red also said there was a letter he had written for her but she wasn’t allowed to read it until the deed was done.
“Because if you knew who I am before, you’d never agree to kill me,” he explained.
Everything was in place, Red was leaving Pascual’s restaurant as planned and Liz got out of her car, ready to shoot him.
But when it came to it, Liz said she couldn’t pull the trigger and Red said that was alright.
However, one of crime lord Neville Townsend’s (Reg Rogers) right-hand men appeared and shot Liz in the chest.
Red instantly shot the perpetrator dead and went to Liz’s aid who started seeing some of the happiest moments in her life play out.
As she bled out, Red cradled Liz in his arms, leaving fans shocked and heartbroken as she died.
Fans have questioned whether she was actually killed off though given Liz’s previous history.

The Blacklist season 9 cast: Who is in the cast? [CAST]
Back in series three, Liz faked her death not once but twice in order to avoid being killed by some dangerous associations of Red’s.
So viewers couldn’t help but wonder if this was another one of her elaborate plans to stay safe.
But the start of season nine of The Blacklist proved this wasn’t the case as the show picked up two years after her death.
With Liz nowhere to be seen, the team had gone their separate ways but when Dembe (Hisham Tawfiq) was injured in an explosion, a now-retired Cooper (Harry Lennix) needed their help to find the organisation responsible.
Cooper didn’t have much of a problem with recruiting Aram (Amir Arison) and Alina (Laura Sohn) but Ressler (Diego Klattenhoff) refused to take part.
He still blamed Red for Liz’s death and so did the man himself as he was found drinking alone in a bar.
After taking him by force, Cooper was able to start getting some information out of Red which is expected to be vital as the series goes on.
The Blacklist is available to watch on NBC.
