Spoilers: EastEnders star reveals Max's sad exit scenes

Max Branning (Jake Wood) embarks on a new chapter in EastEnders, as he decides to leave Walford behind once and for all.

The stalwart of the BBC One soap is due to depart the Square this week, after his plan to win Linda Carter’s (Kellie Bright) affection goes awry.

Max sets out to blackmail Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) in the hopes of getting what he wants, and later, he promises Linda a surprise.

‘He’s got his mind set in terms of what he wants to achieve,’ actor Jake Wood teased when speaking to Metro.co.uk. ‘He wants to get Linda. He thinks that blackmailing Phil will lead to a chain of events that will help him get Linda back.

‘He’s lost the plot in some ways. He’s deluded in terms of what he wants and what he thinks he can get. Linda has been very clear with him in terms of what she wants. She’s made it clear she doesn’t want to have a relationship with him, but Max is not taking no for an answer.’

In typical Max fashion, his plan doesn’t work out, and he ultimately makes a huge decision, as he decides to leave Walford.

‘There’s not much for him in Walford,’ said Jake, ‘he hasn’t really got the car lot and he hasn’t really got a business there. Ian Beale’s gone missing owing him a lot of money. It’s all going a little bit wrong for him.

‘The last of couple of years he’s been very unsettled. He was with Ruby for a while but she dumped him because she wanted an open relationship — which you would’ve thought was perfect for Max Branning, but he weren’t having any of it!

‘This weird connection with Linda — I do understand it, she has her own issues with drinking and addiction, and Max had issues with self-harm, so I think they sort of connect there.

‘They had a deep connection through that, but obviously Max thought there was more to it than there actually was. I think when it came to it Linda was having a bit of a wobble in her marriage, and she wasn’t as fully committed as Max hoped. ‘
