Spoilers: EastEnders airs sad exit for Sonia

Sonia Fowler (Natalie Cassidy) decided to leave in EastEnders tonight (January 8), as she headed off to see daughter Bex (Jasmine Armfield).

Viewers will know that Sonia has been struggling in recent weeks, as she continues her front line work amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

After another patient sadly died of coronavirus, the Walford legend was incredibly emotional, and therefore Ash Panesar (Gurlaine Kaur Garcha) suggested that she take some time off to look after herself.

In tonight’s episode, Sonia decided that she would do just that, and therefore informed Martin (James Bye) that she was planning on going to see Bex in India.

The scenes air mere weeks after it was revealed that actress Natalie Cassidy would be taking an extended break from the BBC One soap.

It was expected that the Albert Square favourite would be off-screen from early January, as bosses have given Natalie some time off from filming duties – which isn’t out of the ordinary for cast members of the serial drama.

A source told Metro.co.uk: ‘The character of Sonia will be off screen for a number of weeks in the new year but it is only to facilitate the normal breaks that actors from the show often take.

‘Scenes coming up will show Sonia’s temporary leaving story, but she is not leaving the show for good and will be back in the not too distant future.’

EastEnders continues Monday January 11 at 8:05pm on BBC One.
