'Riverdale' Star Lili Reinhart Shares Why She Refuses to Silence Her Depression

Lili Reinhart has used the platform Riverdale gave her to speak out about many issues. She talks about body positivity, her bisexuality and sexual assault, since many fans of the CW series are listening. She also speaks a lot about her battles with Depression, with which she says she has dealt since she was 13. Reinhart is 23 in 2020.

Reinhart spoke with the Los Angeles Times for an interview published on Aug. 24. The interview covered her new film, Chemical Hearts, and her book of poetry, Swimming Lessons, both of which speak to mental health in some ways. Chemical Hearts is now available on Amazon Prime, Swimming Lessons comes out Sept. 29 and Riverdale returns for a fifth season in January.

‘Chemical Hearts’ was personal for ‘Riverdale’ star Lili Reinhart

In Chemical Hearts, Reinhart plays Grace, a high school senior dealing with grief. She is mourning the loss of her boyfriend in an automobile accident, which also injured her. Reinhart said the film was personal for her.

“I used a lot of my own inner turmoil,” Reinhart told the Times. “I don’t really describe myself as bubbly or joyful. I’m making myself out to be, like, the Grinch over here. But I’ve lived with depression for a long time now, so playing a girl who is clearly feeling somber and going through heartache and grief wasn’t so foreign to me. It wasn’t that hard for me to access.”

Lili Reinhart refusese to silence her Depression

Because of Riverdale, Reinhart has millions of people listening whenever she posts something on social media. She chooses to speak out when she’s feeling depressed, rather than bottle it up.

“Obviously, I’m dealing with a lot of depression,” Reinhart said. “So how do I find a light at the end of the tunnel? I really wanted to go out of my way to find the root of it. Now, when I feel something come up, I let it come out. Because otherwise, it’s literally harming my body and my brain. Allow your body to feel what it feels. That is literally how you heal.”

Lili Reinhart still protects her personal information

Reinhart says she broke up with Cole Sprouse in March, and has spent much of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic alone. While some of her feelings reflect real-life situations, Reinhart is still careful not to share too much on social media. Since fans are looking for clues about her breakup, it might be counterproductive for her to post about specific things.

“This pandemic has been incredibly hard, and it’s hard to stay positive,” Reinhart said. “I want to post sad songs on my Instagram just like everyone else does. But I hold myself back, because I know I have millions of people watching me who want to dig through every little thing I post and try to figure out the meaning behind it.”
