Richard Madeley prepared for I’m a Celeb after working in rat-infested newsroom

Richard Madeley will soon be swapping his loving home with wife Judy Finnigan for the grounds of Gwrych Castle after it was confirmed he will be joining the slew of celebs taking part in I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! this year.

The wait for the highly anticipated annual show is almost over, with fans able to watch this year’s celebrities face their biggest fears in the most gruelling challenges in just a few days' time.

But it appears as though the 65-year-old is more than ready to take on the bug-ridden castle after working in much worse conditions at the start of his journalistic career.

According to the Mirror, an old friend of the broadcaster recalled working together at their former newsroom in London’s East End which was riddled with rats.

At one of his first jobs as a then-trainee reporter for a local paper in the mid-70s, the Good Morning Britain presenter regularly worked in an office which had a major rat problem due to being located so close to the canal.

Former colleague and photographer Tony Bock recalled how the it wasn’t an uncommon thing to see pest control popping by the office to handle the ongoing vermin issue.

He said: “It was so bad, we had an exterminator come and do regular rounds.

“Richard had a lot of experience in squalid conditions. The East London Advertiser office was right next to the canal so there were mice everywhere.

“But regardless of it all, he’d come to work in a three-piece suit,” he recalled. “He always liked to look the part.”

The TV presenter appeared on GMB on Tuesday morning live from a farm in Wales as he continues to quarantine ahead of his entrance into the castle this Sunday.

But it appears as though the doting dad is more than eager to get stuck in to camp life after complaining about his boredom while quarantining inside the farm.

He told viewers: “I’ve been in quarantine for about 10 days now, and if any of you have been in quarantine my god it’s boring, I mean I'd welcome any trial just for something to do.

“It’s very pretty though, I'm on a Welsh farm, nice views and all the rest of it but I just want to get started.

He added: “They’ve given us some of the costume that we’ve got to wear in the castle. Why we have to wear jungle boots in the castle I can’t guess, unless it’s to keep the rats out.

“There are ghosts as well apparently in the castle so that will be fun. Anyway, my lips are sealed beyond all that. I hope you can watch.”

I'm a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! kicks off on November 21 on ITV
