The new film shows Diana thrown down on the floor and sobbing into a big white dress. It’s a haunting image with hindsight, knowing all that we do of how the marriage turned out. Stewart has said of the movie: “Spencer is a dive inside an emotional imagining of who Diana was at a pivotal turning point in her life. It is a physical assertion of the sum of her parts, which starts with her given name; Spencer. It is a harrowing effort for her to return to herself, as Diana strives to hold onto what the name Spencer means to her.”
The movie is also set at Sandringham in Christmas 1991, ten years after the famous royal wedding on July 29, 1981. This is said to be the moment when the princess decided to leave her increasingly unhappy marriage.
A new poster image was released today with the tagline “Every fairy tale ends. Kristen Stewart is Diana Spencer. A glimpse at Pablo Larraín’s SPENCER.”
The first footage was shown earlier this week at CinemaCon with a teaser trailer and scene where Charles (played by Poldark’s Jack Farthing) and Diana argue about duty and indidelities.

Many observers have assumed it is her wedding day being depicted in teh emotional image, even though the dress clearly does not match the famously voluminous Emmanuelle concoction. The producers and director Pablo Larraín may, of course, have decided to take some artistic license with certain iconic outfits, although this seems a little unlikely.
It could also be a 1981 flashback but the style of the dress seems more sophisticated, reflecting Diana’s style evolution.
Interestingly, fans were quick to point out that the dress and the pose exactly replicate an incredibly famous Oscars moment, which is not at all in keeping with the haunting emotion of the Diana image.
In 2013, actress Jennifer Lawrence tripped on the stairs as she was going to collect her Oscar for Silver Linings Playbook. She burst into laughter and has frequently made fun of herself ever since for a very public tumble that was broadcast to millions around the world.
The two images are startlingly similar, although the emotion behind them is very different.
New film Spencer will focus on Diana’s devastating acceptance that her marriage is over and that she needs to leave.
In the pivotal scene shown at Cinemacon, Charles tells her: “We are given tasks, you have to be able to make your body do things you hate.. for the good of the country. For the people, because they don’t want us to be people. That’s how it is. I’m sorry I thought you knew.”
The film also stars Olga Hellsing as Sarah Ferguson and German actor Nilas Kohrt as Prince Andrew.
Sally Hawkins, Timothy Spall and Sean Harris are also confirmed to appear but their roles have not been revealed.
The teaser trailer and first scene from Cinemacon have not yet been widely released.
