Caitriona Balfe stars in the critically acclaimed historical drama Belfast with Judi Dench and Jamie Dornan from Oscar-nominated director Kenneth Branagh. Ahead of the film’s wide release next week, the Outlander star and the film’s cast picked up the Vanguard award, and the Irish actress’ Starz co-star Sam Heughan sent his congratulations on her latest Instagram post.

Belfast’s main cast received the Vanguard award after the film played at this year’s Palm Springs International Film Festival.

Caitriona took to Instagram this week to celebrate the win with a selfie of herself holding the trophy.

With awards buzz circling the Outlander star, Caitriona penned a humbling message to the Palm Springs Fest for honouring Belfast last week.

She wrote: “Thank you so much @psfilmfest for this gorgeous award.

“It is such an honour to accept The Vanguard award alongside my fellow @belfastmovie gang.

“We greatly appreciate the recognition and we’re just sorry we couldn’t come to beautiful Palm Springs to accept in person. Thank you again!!!”

In the comments, her Outlander co-star wrote: “Wonderful!!! Congrats to the whole team!”

Jamie Fraser star Sam joked: “Did the desert heat melt your trophy?”

The film is already tipped to be a major Oscar contender this year after receiving nominations and wins for several huge awards.

It landed six nominations at the Golden Globes, with director and writer Kenneth taking home the award for Best Screenplay.

Wider audiences have yet to see Belfast for themselves, but it’s fast becoming one of the most anticipated prestige pictures set to kick off 2022.

A number of Caitriona’s 1.8 million followers also sent congratulations to the star in the comments on her new Instagram update.

IG user lisamwake said: “You’re going to need to build a new shelf in your office for this beaut and the ones to follow.

“Well done Caitríona! Congrats to you and the Belfast fam.”

The Oscar race for Best Actress is currently led by Olivia Colman for The Lost Daughter and Lady Gaga for her role in House of Gucci according to the latest odds.

However, Caitriona’s performance as Ma has certainly caught the attention of Academy voters after already gaining a huge number of nominations from other awards.

Meanwhile, it won’t be long before the actress returns to screens yet again with the sixth season of Outlander just round the corner.

The upcoming outing will continue Jamie and Claire’s journey on Fraser’s Ridge whilst fending off the dangers of the American Revolution.

Starz’s popular adaptation of Diana Gabaldon’s series of novels has also been renewed for season seven, so Caitriona’s time-travelling adventures are far from over.

Outlander season 6 premieres Sunday, March 6 on Starz in the USA and Starz Play in the UK.
