The epic Starz drama is based on the original series of novels by American author Diana Gabaldon. Following the recent publication of book nine, and season six of Outlander on the way to screens, the writer has opened up about the final chapter of Claire (played by Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie Fraser’s (Sam Heughan) story.

Writer Diana has teased Outlander’s time-travelling heroine Claire could be killed off in the 10th and final book in the series.

Ahead of season six’s premiere in March, she has been sharing some more insight for readers who are already ahead of Claire and Jamie’s on-screen adventures.

The ninth book in the series, Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone, was published last November and continued the Frasers’ exploits in America.

As Diana originally set out to write 10 books in the Outlander series, fans are concerned a tragic fate could befall the couple in the coming years.

She recently told actor Sam and Outlander executive producer Maril Davis: “No, I never said she wouldn’t die, did I?

“But, a lot of things happen to her in this book, as well as to Jamie.”

Fans who managed to wade through the 900 plus pages of the latest Outlander book were pleased to discover both Claire and Jamie made it out alive.

However, there are still plenty of challenges still to come as the turbulent American Revolution rages on against the backdrop of their idyllic home.

In season six, Jamie’s loyalties will continue to be tested after striking up an uneasy alliance with Governor Tryon (Tim Downie).

Meanwhile, Claire is left at home to protect her community thanks to her modern medical skills.

As the series so far has thrown everything it can at the Frasers to knock them off course, viewers are concerned the story could eventually end in tragedy.

After surviving sexual assault, kidnap and war, Claire has overcome the odds time and time again, but her luck may be running out.

Thankfully, Diana has kept the Frasers alive and well for now, but the TV adaptation isn’t guaranteed to wrap up in line with the original books.

With at least one more novel on the way, Starz may have to fast-track to Diana’s planned ending – or come up with their own – to conclude the Frasers’ story.

The writer even suggested Outlander could continue well beyond the planned 10 instalments.

She admitted: “Well, it depends on Jamie and Claire.

“If they’re not ready to die yet then I guess I’ll have to go on.”

Even if Outlander does conclude with the next book, there’ll still be plenty more content inspired by the Frasers’ story to look forward to.

“That’s the other thing, I do write novellas that fill in blanks in the series,” Diana continued.

“So, I can always go out and then come back again; by a different door, so to speak.”

Claire and Jamie will almost certainly have to pass on eventually, though fans still have a few years to wait to find out if they’ll draw their last breaths on screen.

Outlander season 6 premieres Sunday, March 6 on Starz in the USA and Starzplay in the UK.
