Outlander season 5 theories: Claire and Jamie to fake deaths after Brianna bombshell

Season five of Outlander is proving to be a season of tested loyalties and precarious family life as the tensions of the American Revolution puts pressure on the Frasers. As the Starz series heats up with each episode, fans have been scouring for clues to which characters make it out alive.

New episodes of the compelling historical romance air each Sunday, and viewers are still fretting over how Highland warrior turned family man Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) will deal with his orders to take out his own godfather, Murtagh (Duncan Lacroix).

Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) has embraced her new life in the past, but as her medical methods become increasingly modern she could be facing a dangerous future.

Devoted viewers are still shocked after the reveal of the previous season.

Fiona Graham (Iona Claire) unearthed an obituary from sometime in the 1770s, seemingly confirming the deaths of both Jamie and his wife, Claire.

The exact date is annoyingly smudged, but the Fraser’s now have a horrifying image of the future, in which the couple both die in a fire at their home in Fraser’s Ridge.

This cruel discovery led to their daughter Brianna (Sophie Skelton) to go through the stones back in time to warn them.

However, some think this precognitive document of a grisly future isn’t exactly set in stone.

One fan took to Reddit to propose a startling theory, potentially explaining the presence of the sinister document.

Redditor alt-ging provided context for the theory to jog viewer’s memories and said: “Brianna decided to go through the stones after she finds out about Jamie and Claire’s obituary because she wants to warn them and hopefully prevent their death.

“This eventually leads Roger through the stones after her, and to the birth of her/their child, Jeremiah.”

Brianna and her husband Roger (Richard Rankin) returned to Fraser’s Ridge for a brief moment of family solace.

However, the reveal of the obituary ignited a spark that has yet to burn, and fans are fearful this spooky prediction of the future will return in the current season in some way.

The viewer continued: “I have this working theory that the obituary is fake, and/or they will end up creating a fire to fake their deaths to use as a cover up for when they eventually do decide to return through the stones once they know if Jeremiah can hear them.”

Jamie and Claire are still unaware if baby Jeremiah has the ability to travel in time through the stones.

Once they know, Brianna and Roger may wish to take their son onwards to a safer period in time.

Studious readers of Diana Gabaldon’s original series of novels are remaining characteristically tight-lipped when it comes to spoilers.

In true Outlander fashion, one fan teased: “It’s a bit complicated so I could spill the details on how it happens but may not be as satisfying as seeing it all unfold on screen or reading it.”

The fifth book of Diana’s series, The Fiery Cross, holds most of the answers for season five.

Unfortunately, it boasts almost 1000 pages of steamy, historical action so curious viewers are advised to get reading or remain patient.

Outlander continues Sunday on STARZ and will be available to stream on Amazon Prime on Monday.
