Viewers have loved watching star Kate Winslet transformation into Philadelphia detective Mare Sheehan, and the whodunnit of the HBO hit had fans discussing the shocking outcome week after week. While a second season has yet to be confirmed, Winslet has since detailed the future of the series and whether or not Mare will make a return to screens in the future.

It was announced earlier this week that HBO smash hit Mare of Easttown has been nominated for a total of 16 Emmy awards.

Ever since its debut, the show quickly became one of the streaming service’s biggest ever hits, drawing millions of viewers every episode.

Proving to be a marvellous water-cooler show, Mare of Easttown has been praised for its pacing, storyline, and extraordinary acting performances of Winslet and the supporting cast.

However, as debate about a second season for the limited series continues, star Winslet has provided viewers with an update.

Despite creator Brad Ingelsby stating that a second season was unlikely, Winslet has provided some hope.

Speaking to Deadline, the actress revealed that Mare’s future was an “ongoing conversation”.

“I would love to play her again, I absolutely believe there’s more chapters to her story.

“However, just because the story has touched people that doesn’t necessarily mean creatively we can do it again,” she explained.

“But it doesn’t mean closing doors; we’re opening doors, exploring what’s behind the doors.”

Winslet was careful to not promise passionate fans that a second season was a guarantee, but she did suggest that the creators were exploring if future storylines were exploring.

Audiences have marvelled at Winslet’s transformation into the hardened Philadelphia detective, so it is no wonder viewers would love to see her return to screens.

The actress’ hard work has clearly paid off as she was nominated for an Emmy award for Lead Actress.

The star hasn’t been in a television series since 2011’s Mildred Pierce when she received her last Emmy nomination.

Winslet also told Deadline that viewers worldwide have been able to relate to the character of Mare due to the struggles in her personal life.

“When the chips are down, it’s community and family and the sense of belonging, no matter where you come from, that means everything,” the star remarked.

Adding that the “seismic event in the pandemic” has made Mare of Easttown even more relatable and emotional for fans to experience.

“I think [the show] has that sense of looking out for one another against all odds; it’s something that everyone can relate to.”

The actress also expressed her gratitude for getting the chance to portray such a complex middle-aged woman, a character that “many writers haven’t written before”.

She also revealed that she felt “honoured” and “excited” when creator Ingelsby asked her to take the role of Mare.

“Even though she makes reprehensible choices throughout the series, we ultimately forgive her for those mistakes because of how compassionate she is.”

Adding that portraying the character’s emotional turmoil was a “huge juggling act from Day one.”

Whether or not Mare of Easttown is renewed remains to be seen but, one thing is clear and that is audiences are desperate for further exploration into the life of Mare.

Mare of Easttown is available to watch on HBO Max in the US, and on Now TV in the UK.
