Johnny Depp was born in Kentucky and despite being criticised in the past for claiming to have some Native American ancestry is mainly of English descent. The Jack Sparrow Pirates of the Caribbean star also has some French, German and Irish ancestors in his family history.
Depp’s surname originates with a French Huguenot immigrant called Pierre Dieppe, who settled in Virginia around 1700. Interestingly, it’s considered very likely that the star has a distant relation to the late Queen Elizabeth II and the Royal Family.
Genealogist Nick Barratt has previously claimed that the Hollywood star has the same great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great grandfather as the late monarch. This would mean that the actor and former British sovereign are 20th cousins.
Dr Barratt made this claim on the BBC’s Who Do You Think You Are? series saying: “When I examined Johnny’s history I discovered a likely connection to the royal family. I’ve since established the family tree that demonstrates how. You have to go back more than 500 years to reach the point where his ancestors become royal.”
The genealogist traced Depp’s family name even further back to French Huguenot Deppes, living in 14th century England.
Digging further, Dr Barratt found that on a branch of Depp’s family tree he was descended from Sir William Gascoigne and his wife Margaret Percy, who lived in 15th century Yorkshire.
Now Margaret was the daughter of the 3rd Earl of Northumberland, who was a direct descendant of King Edward III.
The late Queen Elizabeth II is the great (x17) granddaughter of the medieval monarch. And the Hollywood star’s royal link depends on an unrecorded marriage in the 1600s between Yorkshireman Richard Denton and Helen Windebank. This is the only unconfirmed branch of Depp’s family tree, linking him to Sir William Gascoigne.

Dr Barratt added: “I believe the balance of probability is that there is indeed a link between Depp and the royals – though I doubt we’ll ever be able to prove it 100 per cent.” While despite criticism of the star’s claims, he also said: “There are also several junctures where he can claim to have Cherokee blood.”
