Escape to the Chateau is a Channel 4 series that follows the life of Dick Strawbridge and Angel Adoree as they attempt to renovate their family home, Château de la Motte-Husson in France. Despite stumbling across a few hurdles along the way, over the course of five years, Dick and Angel have slowly built their family the home they always wanted. They even managed to open and run a successful wedding and events business from the Chateau. However, in a previously aired episode of the series, Angel admitted there was an aspect of the 19th-century Chateau that she wasn’t fond of.
The mum-of-two explained there is a part of the renovation work she and Dick did in the early days to save them money.
Angel went on to admit she regretted putting gravel down on the ground surrounding the Chateau.
“This bit outside the house, well it is a big monster of just ugliness,” she explained.
“There’s this rectangle shape [and there] is just nothing there.”
Angel continued: “Three years ago when it was just mud outside, I wanted the gravel down because it was €20 a tonne and it covered a space.
“Obviously, I don’t like it now, I don’t think it looks very good,” she laughed.
Angel said was hoping to create something “really special” to replace the gravel but she and Dick had limited options.
“You just can’t put down these outside tiles because they don’t have the oomph needed,” she added.
“It needs to be proper stone, really good flagstones which this house deserves.”
Recalling the moment Angel met her husband and their plans from the get-go, she explained: “When we first started dating. Dick bought me a birdcage, it was huge, it was Victorian and it’s stunning.
“But it started our love and discussions of potentially having an aviary.
“When we started talking about the outside of the house, Dick said, ‘Let’s get those aviaries we’ve been talking about.’ Pretty birds, lovebirds, canaries, colourful birds. I think it’s going to be quite special.”

Angel said: “How I want the aviaries to look is like a big traditional birdcage, I’ve seen them, I know they exist but they’re not easy to find.
“I want this aviary to be really stunning but where there’s a will there’s a way and we will find what we want eventually.
“We think it would be stunning and can’t wait to see it come to life.”
It took and Dick and Angel four years and several trips to France before they finally fell in love with Chateau de la Motte Husson.
Angel knew within half an hour of viewing the Chateau that she wanted to buy it.
The couple managed to buy their dream home for £250,000, which was the equivalent of €340,000 at the time.
They faced some major challenges throughout the renovation, although the first hurdle was having to spend £18,000 out of their £20,000 budget just to get the plumbing and heating working properly.
However, even after the setbacks they faced, engineer Dick and designer Angel managed to transform all 45 rooms in the Chateau.
Escape to the Chateau is available to watch on All4.
