Emmerdales Emma Atkins responds to Charity Dingles baby bombshell: Everyone is shocked!

Emmerdale fans were left floored on Wednesday night to discover that another villager is pregnant with Charity Dingle revealing that she is with child.

And now actress Emma Atkins, who plays Charity, has discussed the storyline and why her character has kept her pregnancy "top secret".

During Wednesday's episode, also pregnant Amelia Spencer confided in Charity and the episode ended with the latter making an abortion appointment without telling beau Mackenzie Boyd.

Emma said: "I think everyone is shocked – the audience and herself, which is why she keeps it top secret. She doesn't want to discuss it with anyone yet.

"Certainly, Mackenzie, because she's not even sure she wants to keep it. And I think once you open that sort of cabinet of, you know, dilemma of what should she do, then it becomes a whole different ball game.

"So at the moment, she's keeping it to herself, which the audience realise. And, you know, that's probably going to be quite tough for the audience. Because obviously, you know, there are two people that usually help to create a child.

"So, yeah, I think it's gonna be interesting. She knows she's got this secret and so there's a lot of worry, anxiety and guilt because at this point, she's not told Mackenzie. And obviously, we see her bump into Amelia [Spencer, who is also pregnant] at the abortion clinic."

Teasing Mackenzie's "really interesting" reaction to the baby news, Emma continued: "A lot of the time, Charity just thinks: 'What's the quickest way to solve this problem? Eradicate the obvious, you know, so make it invisible almost.'

"I think she knows that she's late 40s. She's already not been the greatest mum in the village people know that, but I just don't think she can really handle the idea of, you know, even letting the whole village know that she is pregnant.

"I think there will be a lot of scepticism and judgement. And I think she knows this, because, you know, she's not been the most successful of mothers, you know, it's been a real struggle for her.

"She's not maternal, she's not been with Mackenzie long enough to probably, you know, and because he's a lot younger… I think she thinks it will trap him in those sorts of societal constraints or domesticity, which I think she's like: 'Well, he's not limited in that!'

"But then what's so interesting is, when we the audience eventually see his face, it's extremely different to the one she probably imagined. And that makes it really interesting watching, I think."

Only recently, also pregnant Amelia confided in Charity after she bumped into her outside the abortion clinic and Emma said this helps her character tell Mackenzie.

She said: "I think in a way, it really helps her, weirdly, because it makes her confess actually to Mackenzie, in fact, it's blurted out. But I think in a way, there is an influence going on there because she's suddenly turned maternal with Amelia.

"I think that brings all sorts of emotions out in Charity that she probably wasn't aware was there because a lot of the time your emotions, you know, I'm very subliminal and you don't recognise it until it gets too late. She's [Amelia] a good influence in a way."

Discussing Charity keeping her pregnancy a secret from Mackenzie further, Emma said: "Having a child is such a huge thing and she's completely assuming without even discussing with Mackenzie, which is why it's so wrong. That she always makes that decision for him.

"In her head, she's like: 'Well, Mackenzie isn't going to want it either.' So in her head, when she makes the appointment for the abortion clinic, I think she's decided in her head it would be what Mackenzie would want anyway, therefore, she won't even discuss it with him.

"And then, obviously, this backfires horribly when, you know, Mackenzie eventually learns about it!"
