EastEnders’ Chantelle Atkins (played by Jessica Plummer) was left battered and bruised on her kitchen floor last week when Gray Atkins (Toby-Alexander Smith) brutally assaulted her after incorrectly assuming she had betrayed him. However, as the disgraced lawyer tries to convince his wife that she’s safe, how long will it be before he lashes out again?
Recently, Gray hit out at Chantelle in horrific scenes that saw the hairdresser being knocked to the ground and left for dead.
While Gray assaulted Chantelle, Whitney Dean (Shona McGarty) collapsed in her prison cell as her health deteriorated as a result of her hunger strike.
In tonight’s instalment of the BBC soap, Gray appeared frustrated with his visibly hurt wife as she continued to act cold towards him.
The lawyer was unimpressed with Chantelle’s decision to go to work and headed straight off to see Whitney in a bid to persuade her to let him retake on her case.

Gray began: “I know we disagreed last time but I want you to know I still believe I can help you, if you let me.”
Whitney replied: “I ain’t eating Gray and they might have forced this drip into me…I ain’t listening to you, not until I’ve had my proper say.”
Gray added: “With your permission we can make a further bail application but you won’t get a chance until the trial, that’s your chance to speak.”
“But to that we need you strong,” Gray continued to which Whitney hit back: “I said no.”
“I don’t get it, how does making yourself weaker help your case?” Gray asked. “I’m not just here as your solicitor, Leo conned me too, I may have lost my career.
“This isn’t work anymore, it’s personal, I’ll keep fighting for you Whit, if you let me.”
Later, Chantelle returned home for a lunch break before announcing to Gray that she has taken on a different job at the Panesar brothers’ call centre.
She explained: “I’m not at the salon, the hours weren’t enough so I’m starting at the call centre.”

“Right, so I’m supposed to…,” Gray hit out before Chantelle said: “Kheerat said I could work as many shifts as I wanted, you don’t have a job so we don’t have a choice.”
Later, Gray continued: “I’ve been thinking is this call centre thing really necessary? Rather than take on another job, we can make cuts, pull back on a few things.”
“I’ve sold my Spurs season ticket, take the pressure off a bit,” he remarked. “You look tired…”
Gray reached out to Chantelle but the hairdresser flinched and moved away causing Gray to plead: “Chantelle, I’m not going to [hurt you].”

Gray was then sent off to Whitney’s house to try and find any evidence he could to prove Leo King (Tom Wells) was stalking her and he soon discovered the trainee solicitor’s hideaway in Whitney’s attic.
After discovering the creepy hideout, Gray turned to Sonia Fowler (Natalie Cassidy) and said: “I’ve got him,” but this could spell trouble for Chantelle.
Gray is determined to stop his wife from working and having an aspect of her life he has no control over but while he’s out of work, he can’t stop her.
Could Gray’s true motive for helping Whitney be to get his job back and force Chantelle to stop working?
EastEnders continues Tuesday at 7.30pm on BBC One.
