News broke earlier today that Waterloo Road will be returning to BBC One, but some Holby City fans have reacted by calling the school-based show a replacement for the popular media drama, following the news of its cancellation.
The BBC announced Holby City’s axing back in June, with a statement at the time reading:
‘We are incredibly proud of Holby City but it’s with great sadness that we are announcing that after 23 years, the show will end on screen in March of next year.
‘We sometimes have to make difficult decisions to make room for new opportunities and as part of the BBC’s commitment to make more programmes across the UK, we have taken the difficult decision to bring the show to a close in order to reshape the BBC’s drama slate to better reflect, represent and serve all parts of the country.
Moments after the news on Holby City’s cancellation broke, a fan launched a petition to try and save the show. Right now, over 42,000 people have signed it.
Now, with news Waterloo Road will be back six years after its final series, fans can’t help but wonder if the show will air in Holby City’s Tuesday night slot on BBC One.
yeah but weâd rather have holby x https://t.co/1ljOPnYRbY
Quoting the tweet from the BBC Press Office announcing Waterloo Road’s return, one fan wrote: ‘yeah but we’d rather have Holby’.
Waterloo Road is coming back? Is this the BBC admitting they were wrong to axe it? Just like theyâre wrong about axing Holby City?
Another added: ‘Wait is Waterloo Road the soap set up north replacing Holby’.
WAIT SKASKSKS is waterloo road the soap set up north replacing holby ðððð
When are you announcing that Holby is coming back for a brand new series? https://t.co/pPBrf4WBuI
the way theyâve literally cancelled holby to revive waterloo road in manchester like â¦.. u did this for what
BTW I am in no way against Waterloo Road coming back, heaven knows I’m looking forward to them explaining away the Scotland years as a bad dream. But do it at the expense of Holby City after promising that the money would be pumped into new shows? Not sure.
So the BBC cancels Holby to make way for fresh ideasâ¦and then brings back Waterloo Road.
Metro.co.uk have reached out to the BBC for a comment on the matter.
Piers Wenger, Director of BBC Drama, gave a comment on the news of Waterloo Road’s return:
‘Waterloo Road is the perfect lens through which to explore post-Covid Britain, from the perspective of those who have arguably been affected most: young people in education.
We are thrilled to be returning to this brilliant format – its thrills and spills, unmissable characters and high drama – at a time when audiences across Britain need it most – and to be collaborating with the brilliant Cameron Roach and Wall To Wall on its return.’
