“He’s over the moon, but how can you be over the moon I mean it’s completely messed up situation.

“[He’s feeling all sorts of emotions] elation, desperate.

“I go from scenes of being completely elated to completely devastated and I realise Oliver’s going to die, to completely devastated my son might not love me, to the point where I’m scared that Natasha might take him away.”

Discussing the possibility of Natasha withdrawing Nick’s rights to see Sam, Ben added: “I know what Nick’s like, he won’t let that happen. He’ll fight.”

Has the actor teased a possible custody battle is on the horizon between the scored lovers?

After several phone calls, they call give her the same answer and she is left feeling utterly defeated.

She also takes aim at her sister, Toyah Battersby (Georgia Taylor) for stabbing her in the back and choosing to side with Imran.

Meanwhile, at the hospital, Dr Howarth explains how they need to run blood tests for Oliver as they are concerned for his liver function.

And later that day, the little boy suddenly arrests.

Steve can no longer continue with Leanne’s tirade, and implores his ex to put an end to Oliver’s suffering, letting him die with some dignity.

Finally, Leanne announces she has dropped the plans to appeal and the next day she is forced to say goodbye to her child.

Preparing for the moment, Leanne wants to gather all of Oliver’s favourite things – including his pyjamas – and at home, Nick gently reminds Leanne it is time to return to the hospital.

Viewers will see Steve and Leanne sit at Oliver’s bedside singing ‘You are my Sunshine’, while Nick and Tracy Barlow (Kate Ford) listen from the hospital corridor.

The singing stops and they know that Oliver has died.

With nothing else left to do, Leanne returns home and curls up on Oliver’s bed, sobbing her heart out.
