Comedian Johnny Vegas opens glamping site in Yorkshire in unexpected career move

Comedian Johnny Vegas has opened a glamping site in Yorkshire in a shock career move.

People up and down the country are repurposing old vehicles into stunning boutique hotels and the 50-year-old TV star is about to join the craze.

Together with his assistant Beverley Dixon, he gets buying an old Matese bus online as part of new Channel 4 show Johnny Vegas: Carry on Glamping.

He told Radio Times recently: "I felt like I was on a treadmill, and it had been a long time since I’d done anything that inspired me or brought me satisfaction.

"As a stand-up you make your own work, but I’ve been sleepwalking, waiting for it to come in. And that’s why the glampsite became so important.

"It was something proactive. I had to work to make it happen, and that was a real boost, especially in lockdown.

"Friends say they haven’t seen me so animated in years – getting back into my studio, getting the kiln started up, making the tiles and glasswork for the bus."

Johnny Vegas: Carry on Glamping kicks off next week and follows the comic, Bev and a gang of vintage bus enthusiasts as they attempt to bring new life to a collection of old vehicles as the clock is ticking to get the site open in time

The Benidorm star loses several potential sites for his glamping business, and when Coronavirus hits, the whole project is left in jeopardy.

However, their luck begins to change when a farm in the stunning Yorkshire countryside offers to house the site and Johnny’s bus renovation slowly starts to take shape. But a devastating crash once again threatens the whole endeavour.

All four episodes of the series will be available as a box set on All4 from May 5, following the transmission of the first episode.

Johnny recently revealed that lockdown has helped him grieve following the loss of both his parents.

He told the Telegraph in November last year that he hadn’t previously thought too much about his loss, as he was always busy and "expected to be Johnny".
