Later this year Marvel will continue their Disney Plus TV show releases with What If…? The animated show delves into alternate universes within the mythos and showcases different versions of some iconic heroes. The bombastic stories will include Peggy Carter (played by Hayley Atwell) receiving the super-soldier serum and becoming Captain Britain in place of Steve Rogers’ (Chris Evans) Captain America. Meanwhile, T’Challa (Boseman) is due to be abducted by Yondu (Michael Rooker) as a child.

In an exclusive chat with Express.co.uk about his new film Body Brokers, Crossbones star Grillo spoke about his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the upcoming series.

Rumlow was a main villain in 2014 movie Captain America: The Winter Soldier and made a return in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War where he met his untimely end. He also made a cameo in Avengers Endgame when Steve travelled back in time.

Revealing what he could talk about in the show, Grillo said: “I can tell you absolutely nothing!

“You know what I’m going to tell you… I can tell you I just did another episode and the quality – and this is the great thing about Marvel – the quality of the scripts… it’s just the best of the best of the best. And that’s why they’re so successful.”

Grillo also touched upon how many episodes he’ll be appearing in in the upcoming show.

He said: “I don’t know the number. But as they kind of finish them we find out then if we’re going to be in that one.”

Considering Rumlow played a large part in two of the Captain America films, it would make sense to see the villain make a return in a large portion of the series.

Although his character died in 2016, Grillo has secretly been recording lines for the show for the past year during the coronavirus pandemic.

Grillo discussed how he went about recording voice work without leaving his house: “I’m in my closet with a bunch of equipment and sheets hanging up because of Covid!

“Everybody is really… they send over all kinds of boxes and equipment. And my buddy who works with me, Alex, we go to the closet and we set it up and I sit in there and it’s strange!”

Perhaps the strangest aspects of the new series is that Boseman, who died August 28, 2020 from cancer, had already recorded his lines for the show.

Marvel’s trailer for the show revealed Boseman will be playing a version of his Black Panther character  T’Challa that becomes the galaxy’s new Star Lord – instead of Peter Quill (Chris Pratt).

Speaking about whether he worked with Chadwick in What If…? Grillo said: “No, but I was friends with Chad.

“I’ve known Chadwick for a good seven or eight years. I mean… superstar talent. Would have had an amazing, beautiful, eloquent career.

“And, you know, he changed the game. He was really a special actor, a special man.”

The 55-year-old actor also touched upon working in close-quarters with Evans during the iconic elevator fight scene in The Winter Soldier.

Grillo said: “Yeah we did a lot of training and then on the day, I realised it was necessary for us to hit each other for real because it was so tight.

“When we left that elevator… we didn’t leave anything in the elevator I’ll tell you that much. We were black and blue and sore. And, you know, we beat each other up!”

He also added: “I still consider it Marvel’s best movie. I consider Winter Soldier the best all-around film.”
