Volkswagen is slammed for ‘sexist’ advert that suggests only DADS know about cars – as viewers joke ‘don’t worry, women don’t drive anyway’

A new Volkswagen advert has been branded ‘sexist’ by social media users after it suggested only men know about cars.  

The German manufacturer posted the clip to Twitter to promote its new all-electric ID.3 model which focused on the experience of one father taking his children to play football.

The video was uploaded alongside a quote which read: ‘First time we drove it to football I had the whole team around the car and all the dads asking me questions!’

And social media users were quick to pick up on the seemingly ‘sexist’ comment.


Volkswagen has been slammed on social media for its ‘sexist’ advert that speaks exclusively to ‘all dads’ after posting the clip to Twitter to promote its new all-electric ID.3 model

The video sees a man named Simon leaning up against his grey hatchback as he explains what it has been like to drive the new car.

‘There’s lots of space. I’m the coach of my son’s football team so we’ve had a few trips,’ he says. 

‘All the football gear fits in the back, all of  the cones and everything else.’ 

His wife helps strap his two young children in the back seats as he talks to camera before he then drives them off to their son’s football match. 

 

 

 

 

Social media users were quick to pick up that there was no mention of ‘mums’ or women wanting to know more about the car. 

He continues: ‘The first time we drove it to football, I had the whole team just around the car and all the dads asking me questions and now one of the dads has gone on a test drive this week because he loved it so much.’ 

The father speaks about how he drove the car to collect his new puppy, before the advert ends.

One Twitter user wrote: ‘”All the dads”. Remind me, which century are we in now please?’

They later replied to another user before adding: ‘Honestly though, I think that comes under casual #everydaysexism.’ 

Another sarcastically commented: ‘Yeah mums don’t care about cars, they don’t even drive.’ And a third added: ‘Only dads care about cars.’
