If you read the instructions for most facial sheet masks, they tend to advise the mask be left on the skin for around 15-20 minutes – but how often have you just forgotten you’re wearing it and ended up leaving the mask on for much longer?
We’ve all done it, and some of us may not even pay any attention to the suggested use time anymore. But TikTok "skinfluencer" yayayayoung, who has has racked up an impressive 1.5 million followers from his short skincare tutorials, has filmed a video answering frequently-asked fan queries about masking: how long to leave a sheet mask on for, and why you shouldn’t leave it on for hours.

“Can you wear a sheet mask longer than the recommended amount of time?” the TikToker, who calls himself “Egg King”, titles the video.
“Directions are there as a guideline, it’s up to you – everyone’s tolerance is different,” he says. “Most masks give a maximum time of 15-20 minutes.”
He then caveats this information with the “one thing you want to make sure not to do” – let the mask dry out on the skin.

“Long story short, you’ll just be pulling all the moisture back out of your skin,” he explains.
It sounds super simple, but it’s the best way to tell when you’ve got the most from your sheet mask. If you’ve worn it for longer than 20 minutes and it feels like all the liquid or serum has seeped into your skin, and the mask itself feels dry, it’s time to take it off.

“In what order should I do my skincare?” a fan asked him.
“Oil cleanse, foam cleanse, exfoliate, toner, essence, treatment, sheet mask, eye cream, moisturiser, sunscreen,” he replies, noting that some of those can be taken out or added in, but this is his preferred routine.
