My son is demanding I leave my 'controlling' husband as he is coming between us

DEAR DEIDRE: I’VE had a huge row with my son, who is 32 and thinks my partner is controlling me. I’ve been married to my second husband for five years. I left my first husband 20 years ago.

Now my son is demanding I leave my husband. He says he’s trying to come between me and my family.

My son started calling in on his way home from work and it was always when we were having dinner.

I’d get up from the table to let him in and make him a cuppa, while leaving my meal.

My husband got the hump about it and said my son should let us know when he’s coming – and if it’s not convenient, we’ll say.

I don’t agree but it’s caused friction between my son and husband.

My son says I should end my marriage.

My daughter-in-law agrees, to a point, but says my son shouldn’t need to make an appointment to visit his own mum.

I’m 61, my husband is 65.

DEIDRE SAYS: Your son may have misinterpreted your husband’s request.

There’s some resentment there, perhaps born of a historical control issue between you and his father.

Ask your son to meet to explain that your husband’s request is reasonable. He should text when he wants to visit and you should too.
