My mum encouraged me to move out, but now I'm struggling to pay my bills

DEAR DEIDRE: MY mum has nagged me for years about moving out – but now I have, I’m struggling to pay my bills.

Ever since I finished my degree six years ago, she has said my priority should be getting on the property ladder.

I put it off for a few years – it’s not that I didn’t want to move out, but I was worried I wouldn’t be able to afford it.

I was right. The deposit and furnishing my two-bed house took most of my savings.

And once I’ve paid the mortgage and bills each month, I’m left with £200 for the rest of the month. I’m 27.

Recently I’ve been offered night shifts at the hospital – I’m a nurse.

They pay more but I’m worried I’m going to have no social life, because I’ll be working in the evenings and sleeping all day.

DEIDRE SAYS: It might be a good idea to try out the night shifts first, to see how you get on. Could you cover someone’s holiday?

Or have you considered taking in a lodger? This would help towards those monthly payments.
