A mum-of-two got the last laugh when she was served a harsh eviction notice from her landlord.
Sonja Lee spotted the brutal note on the front door of her apartment in Houston, Texas.
It featured a smiling emoji face, which waved and asked her: “Guess who’s moving? YOU.”
The letter added: “Pay your outstanding balance or release your apartment and turn in your keys to the leasing office by 6PM today.
“Eviction will be filed promptly Thursday morning (8/18/2020).”
The 33-year-old was understandably upset by the notice, so took to Twitter to complain: “So y’all think it’s funny to antagonise the person that’s going through financial hardship with putting an emoji stating, ‘Guess who’s moving today?’ There was nothing funny about that.”
The mum had fallen on financial difficulties after losing her job.
She was let go from her role at a local food chain back in March and was unable to receive unemployment benefits after.
So in a bid to make an arrangement about paying rent, Sonja reached out to her landlord.
She expected a sympathetic response, but was served an eviction notice after failing to pay her landlord in June and July.
Thankfully, the mum’s luck changed when her tweet went viral.
Many were sympathetic about Sonja’s situation – especially as many have been struggling to make ends meet during the coronavirus pandemic.
Kind donors fundraised more than £25,000 to support the family.
And that’s not the only good news – as the mum has also landed a new job too.
In an interview with People magazine, Sonja said: “It’s been so overwhelming and I am so grateful.
“I have never experienced anything like this. I have to pay this forwards 10 times fold.”
