Met Gala 2022 makeup looks: The 3 standout trends

While you were sleeping the 2022 Met Gala has been and gone, as some of the world’s most famous faces flocked to New York for Anna Wintour ’s annual charity ball.

And though celebrities often seize the chance to wear something totally unique on the star-studded red carpet, there were some key makeup trends that emerged on the night, giving us all some major beauty inspo for the months ahead.

From colour block eyeshadow to supermodel complexion, here are the three most popular and very wearable makeup looks from the night to know about (though there’s no saying you can’t don Naomi Campbell ’s face gems too…).

Wearable makeup trends from the 2022 Met Gala

Coloured eyeshadow

A classic brown or black smoky eye will always have its place in our hearts (and on the red carpet), but many celebrities chose to mix things up with a fun pop of colour in block eyeshadow form. Take Bridgerton and Derry Girls star Nicola Coughlan, who stepped out with pink eyeshadow taken right up to the brow bone for a very spring appropriate look.

She wasn’t the only one: Tessa Thompson sported pink eyeshadow that seemed to diffuse into her blusher, Gen Z muse Olivia Rodrigo went for shimmery purple, and Pam and Tommy star Lily James opted for a sparkly sky blue shade of eyeshadow applied in a subtle wing shape. If these pinks, purples and blues all take your fancy this summer, NYX Professional Makeup’s Midnight Orchid Palette, £11 here, is a good place to start.

Gothic glamour

For those who weren’t opting for colourful and bright eyeshadow looks and glitter galore, at the other end of the scale gothic looks were having a major moment.

Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner was serving almost vampire-like glamour with her blood red lip, red smoky eye and mermaid length waves. If Morticia Addams was a redhead, Sophie could be her with this look. Several other celebs opted for dark shadow that gave off a gothic vibe: Karlie Kloss sported a hugely heavy dark shadow look, while Vanessa Hudgens went for a subtler dark smoky eye paired with fluttery lashes and a slicked back bun.

To recreate the gothic vibe, eyeshadow sticks are your friend as they last for ages and are so easy to blend out, either a brush or your finger. We love VIEVE Eye Wands, £21 each here, or Bobbi Brown Long Wear Cream Shadow Sticks, £25 each here.

90s supermodel

There were several ACTUAL nineties supermodels at the 2022 Met Gala (Kate, Naomi, Cindy) and unsurprisingly, the major moment that nineties beauty is currently having was reflected on the red carpet too. Several celebrities nailed this Cindy-inspired brief of perfectly bronzed skin, defined eyes, a nude lip and well-groomed brows on the night – Hailey Bieber, Joan Smalls and Cindy’s very own daughter, Kaia Gerber, all channelled her perfectly.

Charlotte Tilbury’s Flawless Filter is all over TikTok right now and with good reason, because the finish is like perfectly dewy and blurred Hollywood skin, bottled. Snap up one of its 12 shades for £36 here and layer it under or over your makeup for complexion perfection.

Don’t judge us, but we’re already excited for next year’s red carpet.
