I am addicted to painkillers even though it is causing my relationship to fall apart

DEAR DEIDRE: FIVE years ago I hurt my back and was prescribed opiate painkillers.

I soon found myself addicted to them and it’s now ruining my life.

I’m a woman aged 50 and have two kids with my husband, who’s 52.

When I ran out of my prescription once, I stole some of my mother-in-law’s muscle relaxants.

She found out and told him. I felt deeply ashamed and it rocked our marriage. I’m sure he only stayed for the kids.

I’m barely hanging on to my job and my relationship is falling apart.

But I can’t function without these opiates.

DEIDRE SAYS: Before you can work on your relationship or life, you need help with your opiate addiction.

Perhaps if your husband sees you are trying to deal with it, he will be more supportive.

Please read my support pack on Drug Worries and speak to your doctor as well.

Drug service Frank (talktofrank.com) has details of counselling and treatment.

A support group like Narcotics Anonymous (ukna.org) could also provide vital help.

You may need rehab. Find out more from Rehab-Online (rehab-online.org.uk).
