The two were friends first before the future Duchess of Cambridge caught the young prince’s eye at a fashion show wearing a see-through dress. Prince William was excited to start university away from the camera and be a normal student on a university campus.
According to royal commentator Robert Lacey, Kate ensured she would end up at university where she could hopefully befriend William.
In his book ‘Battle of Brothers’, Lacey said: “Kate was very strategic. She gave up her place at one of Britain’s premier universities, Edinburgh, and opted for another one that probably didn’t have the same academic standard.
“She had already been to Edinburgh to get her flat accommodations sorted out but switched universities and switched her courses to history of art because that was William’s.
“She delayed her own education by a year and even takes the chance she won’t get into St. Andrews.”
According to Lacey, after it was announced William was attending St Andrews, applications increased by 44 percent, so Kate definitely was not alone.
In their fresher’s year in 2001, William and Kate lived in the same hall of residence at St Andrews called St Salvator’s.
The two quickly became friends, having much in common and they began socialising together and playing tennis.
In March 2002 Prince William paid £200 for a front-row seat at a fashion show where Kate appeared in a see-through lace dress, showing off her fabulous black underwear.
It is safe to say this definitely caught the 19-year-old’s attention, and the two were believed to develop feelings for each other around this period.
Kate was credited with persuading William to continue his studies when he considered quitting in his first year of university.
They began sharing a four-bedroom Edwardian townhouse at the start of their second year.
At the time Kate was dating another student, Rupert Finch, but the connection between William and Kate was undeniable according to their university friends.
In March 2004, the pair were pictured at the Swiss ski resort Klosters, which provided photographic evidence the two were romantically linked.
The following year, they were pictured at Klosters again, but this time with Prince Charles, which seemed to confirm the relationship from within the Royal Family.
William and Kate unfortunately split in April 2007, but they were soon back together again a few months later.
In July 2007, Kate was a VIP guest in the royal box for William and Harry’s Concert for Diana.
She was later seen with William at the after-show party which confirmed the rumours the two were back together.
William proposed to Kate on a trip to Kenya to visit a wedding of friends in October 2010.
He popped the question with his mother Diana’s engagement ring as they holidayed at Lake Rutundu.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge sealed their partnership in a 2011 royal wedding at Westminster Abbey.
In 2013 they became parents to the future king of England, Prince George.
They then welcomed Princess Charlotte in 2015 and Prince Louis in 2018.
