Intermittent fasting is when a person abstains from food or eats very few calories from anywhere from 12 hours to a day.

In recent years, this has become a popular way for people to improve their health, enhance their performance and lose weight.

This technique used to be called time restricted feeding or periodic fasting.

The Michigan University study concluded: “Current evidence suggests that intermittent fasting is an effective non-medicinal treatment option for type 2 diabetes”.

However, the report stated: “More research is needed to delineate the effects of intermittent fasting from weight loss. Physicians should consider educating themselves regarding the benefits of intermittent fasting.”

The reason why intermittent fasting has received such a positive response was because it was found to:
• Decrease fasting glucose
• Decrease fasting insulin
• Reduce insulin resistance

According to the study: “[Some] patients were able to reverse their need for insulin therapy.”

As the report suggests, more research is needed, but it is a positive sign.

As mentioned, more traditional treatments for type 2 diabetes include medication and lifestyle changes.

This medication helps to keep your blood sugar at a normal level.

You may also need to take this medication for the rest of your life.

There are different types of medication and so you may not have the same treatment plan as someone else.

Most are offered a drug called metformin first.

If this doesn’t work your GP may recommend something different.

There can be some side effects from taking type 2 diabetes medication.

These side effects include bloating and diarrhoea, weight loss, weight gain, feeling nauseous and swelling in one or more parts of your body.

A way to manage your type 2 diabetes is through your diet.

There is nothing you should avoid if you have type 2 diabetes, although a diet low in sugar and containing a wide range of fruit, vegetables and starchy foods is recommended.

As well as a healthy diet, it is recommended you try to stay active as well.
