Today is Shrove Tuesday in the UK and we all know what that means… pancakes!
As it’s the final day before lent it’s traditional that those sacrificing rich foods like eggs and sugar for lent would use them all up in a last hurrah.
Now, we all generally use the day as an excuse to gorge ourselves on delicious pancakes for breakfast, lunch or dinner (or all three).
Whether you prefer thin English pancakes or fluffy American-style ones the central component is the same.
But, toppings are where our originality begins to shine…
Facebook posters in a popular foodie group sparked a lively debate over the best way to deck out your pancakes earlier today.
And it turns out we Brits enjoy a variety of classic pancake toppings… and some totally bizarre ones.
The original poster wrote: “What does everyone put on their pancakes?
“Anyone have a weird Pancake Day topping or tradition lol?
“I sometimes throw half an avocado and some hot sauce on mine for a savoury start to the meal… I know, terrible of me.”
Avocado and hot sauce?
Not sure about that one…
Others all claimed to prefer the classic lemon juice and sugar combo while many preferred golden or maple syrup.
All top tier in our opinion.
Plenty more enjoyed sweet toppings like butter and sugar or Nutella.
One person wrote: “Carmel banana or apples whichever I have in the fridge!”
“Galaxy Honeycomb,” suggested another.
A third wrote: “We're doing Nutella stuffed pancakes with kinder toppings!
“Cannot contain my excitement for tea time."
Orange juice also made a number of appearances on the post.
But, strangely it seems that savoury pancakes are proving popular – and with some odd results.
One person said: “I am currently making cheesy potato pancakes with a tomato sauce for lunch.”
“I love garlic and herb Philadelphia with chorizo and sundried tomato for a savoury pancake,” commented another.

A third noted: “Chicken and mayo stuffed pancakes or even a good savoury mince.”
While another said: “Bacon, chicken and syrup for us!”
We like the mix of the sweet and salty – and plenty of Brits commented that they enjoyed bacon, eggs and syrup too.
Another foodie added: “I love savoury ones like cheese and ham or bacon followed by sweet ones like chocolate spread, jam or lemon and sugar.”
“Cheese and beans for main and then sweet for dessert,” agreed another.
The post sparked off memories for some posters.
One woman wrote: “My mum always made gravy on pancakes and then we'd have a dessert pancake afterwards.
“My boyfriend thinks I'm crazy when I make them now”
While a final foodie summed it up in one and said: “Golden syrup for me as a sweet pancake but they are just flat Yorkshire puddings so you can have anything on them.”
What do you think?
Do you enjoy savoury, sweet or something even more bizarre on your pancakes?
