A British family including a nine-year-old child have all tested positive for coronavirus while on a ski holiday in Bulgaria.

The family are staying in Bansko and it’s thought the child’s uncle may have passed the virus on having been in contact with his sister in the UK, who had already tested for the bug, local media report.

Officials from the Regional Health Inspectorate told the Bulgarian National Radio that the child arrived in Bansko together with his uncle and his family on Friday evening.

Bansko is one of Bulgaria's most popular ski resorts where many British nationals have their own property.

Just hours after the briefing Bansko ski resort was shut down with immediate affect.

It follows all French ski resorts closing yesterday.

They will not reopen for the rest of the season as a result of the coronavirus outbreak.

The announcement was made by ski resort operators dealing another heavy blow to a France’s tourism industry.

“The ski season ends today,” Domaines Skiables de France, which groups the country’s resort operators, said on Twitter.

“Holiday-makers and professionals, we’re all passionate about skiing and must face up to the seriousness of the situation.”

Most resorts usually close in April or early May.

The shutdown comes just three weeks before the French and British school holidays, one of the busiest periods of the season.

Prime Minister Edouard Philippe announced on Saturday evening that France would shut all shops, restaurants and entertainment sites.
