The Duke of Cambridge appeared in high spirits as he met with emergency workers  to celebrate 999 Day today.

Prince William, 38, is currently living at Kensington Palace with Kate Middleton, 38, and their children Prince George, eight, Princess Charlotte, six, and Prince Louis, three, return to school and nursery in the capital.

Today marked his return to work after his annual summer break, with the royal meeting emergency responders and members of the public at the Dockhead Fire Station who have received life-saving support.

Among those who chatted with the Prince was five-year-old Lila, who was successfully resuscitated by ambulance technician Charlotte Speers, along with fire-fighters Marc Rustage and James Knight, after she collapsed.

Prince William’s official Twitter account shared two images of the event, posting: ‘This #999Day we’re saying a huge thank you to everyone working and volunteering in the emergency services and the NHS.

‘Today, the Duke met some of the incredible people saving lives across the UK, as they were reunited with those that they saved.’

Prince William appeared relaxed at the event, donning an unbuttoned blue shirt with a navy blazer for the occasion.

It comes after the royal’s former private secretary has claimed. Kate Middleton’s ‘down-to-earth background’ balances perfectly with Prince William’s ‘experience in The Firm’ as they prepare to ‘lead modern monarchy’.

Insiders have now revealed how the the couple’s ‘magic’ comes from their different backgrounds, and said the pair plan to ‘mix the traditional duty with being thoroughly modern parents’.

Speaking to People magazine, the Cambridge’s former private secretary Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton said: ‘He has the experience of knowing where the institution sits and seeing it evolve. The Duchess brings this pragmatic awareness of what it’s like to be from a decent, down-to-earth family.’

Meanwhile Jamie said Kate’s hard-working family background offered a perfect balance to Prince William’s future as king.

During the afternoon, he could be seen speaking with members of the RNLI crew while sitting at a picnic table

Another source added that they hope to focus on ‘different subjects the family hasn’t always connected with’, with Jamie explaining: ‘If you had scoured the realm you couldn’t have got a better pair, frankly.’

It comes as royal author Andrew Lownie claimed the couple have been given a ‘higher role’ in the royal family due to their popularity.

Speaking to the Express, Andrew said the Duke and Duchess are stepping forward as the Queen is ‘standing back.’

He explained: ‘William and Kate, who seem to be very popular, are stepping into the position that Charles and Camilla had.

The royal spoke to emergency workers as well as their families during the event in London this afternoon

‘Because they are, I would say almost more popular than Charles and Camilla, they’ve probably been given a higher role.’

It was recently revealed the Duke and Duchess are ‘seriously considering’ a move to Windsor.

The mooted relocation, which would bring the family closer to the Queen, is the most significant sign yet that the couple are preparing to take on a far more senior role at the heart of the Royal Family.

A source said William and Kate have been ‘eyeing up’ accommodation options in the area suitable for bringing up their three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

They added that properties under consideration could include Fort Belvedere, a Grade II listed house with tower towards the southern end of Windsor Great Park, where King Edward VIII – the Queen’s uncle – signed his abdication papers in 1936.

The fort is owned by the Crown Estate and leased to the Weston family, close friends of the Royals. From the top of the tower, on a clear day, Edward once wrote, you could see the dome of St Paul’s ‘with a spyglass’.

But the fort has been dismissed as an option by Palace aides.

Moving the family west – wherever they end up – could prove strategic as well as practical, as the monarchy prepares for major changes in the years ahead.

At the moment, the Cambridges split their time between their London base at Kensington Palace, where they also have their offices, and their country home of Anmer Hall in Norfolk.
