The only thing Adam Morrison could do was scream.
The former Gonzaga star presently is part of his alma mater’s radio team, and Morrison went bonkers when freshman Jalen Suggs banked in a 3-pointer at the overtime buzzer Saturday night against UCLA to keep the Bulldogs undefeated and vault them into Monday’s NCAA Tournament championship game against Baylor.
As play-by-play partner Tom Hudson is explaining the frantic final sequence and the immediate celebration, the 36-year-old Morrison can be heard repeatedly screaming “Yes!” and “Wow!”
A tearful Morrison had been on the other side of a heartbreaking loss to UCLA in the Sweet 16 of the 2006 tournament, with the Bruins scoring the final 11 points of the game for a 73-71 win. Morrison was a first-team All-America selection and the co-player of the year nationally that season with Duke’s JJ Redick.
Top-seeded Gonzaga (31-0) can become the first Division I men’s team to complete an unbeaten season since Indiana in 1976 on Monday night against Baylor (27-2). It will be Gonzaga’s second appearance in the championship game after losing in the finals to North Carolina in 2017.
