Piers Morgan made a sweet gesture to Susanna Reid by splitting his Best News Presenter TRIC Award with her.

The 56 year old former Good Morning Britain star, won the gong for the Best News Presenter at the glitzy ceremony on Wednesday 15 September.

After being presented with the award by host Roman Kemp, Piers said of his former GMB colleague: "I know it ended a bit dramatically earlier this year but we had an amazing run – five years on that show I did. And I spent all five years on that show with Susanna Reid.

"And it's a bit weird, you end up like you've got this extra wife and she doesn't even get the good bits," he said while laughing.

"And they're very good bits I have to say," he cheekily added before continuing: "When I heard we were both nominated for this, it just seemed to me that if I won, I only won this as part of a team.

"And so, we saw each other earlier and I know she's here, and I would like to invite Susanna up to share this award with me."

Piers is clearly delighted with his win as he beat his former GMB colleague Susanna Reid, whom he reunited with at the glittering ceremony, and BBC presenter Huw Edwards to the gong.

As Susanna went up on stage, Piers kissed her on the cheek and she said: "I just second every single word you said about our team. It has been a huge responsibility for us and an honour and a privilege throughout the lockdown and thank you to everyone at Good Morning Britain.

"And, obviously, thank you to everyone on screen and behind the screens."

Susanna then turned to Piers and said: "And obviously a huge thank you to you as well. It was a remarkable five years. It was tough, it was challenging.

"You can start an argument in an empty room and I've never known anyone get so worked up about sausage rolls."

Shortly before the ceremony, Piers made a jibe at Susanna, 50, and Ant and Dec on Twitter, after the TV duo beat him to the Best Presenter National Television Award last week.

As he shared snaps of his fellow nominees, Piers wrote: "Looking forward to the prestigious @TRICawards later today.

"I'm nominated for News Presenter of the Year, up against @thehuwedwards and someone called @susannareid100….

"On a positive note, at least Ant & Dec can't win it."

He later responded to BBC News reader Huw's tweet, which included a photo of the Welsh journalist dressed as James Bond, it read: "@TRICawards Licence to win #007 And good luck to @susannareid100 @piersmorgan".

Piers, who's dad is Irish, replied with: "May the best (Irish) person win."

It comes after Piers, who recently reunited with Kate Garraway after his GMB exit, teased his return to television after quitting GMB earlier this year.

Piers stormed off the set and later quit the ITV news show after backlash over his comments about Meghan Markle following her interview with Oprah Winfrey.

Months after his dramatic exit, Piers was cleared by Ofcom after the broadcasting regular received a record number of complaints over Piers' TV rants.

He later joked: "Maybe I should just storm back in."

Piers later asked GMB for his job but soon insisted he will not be returning to GMB.

He told the Daily Mail: "I put that post on social media asking if I’d get my job back to prove a point.

"I wouldn’t go back, not without a public apology and I’m not going to get one.

"I’ve got much bigger things coming up. The future is exciting. The next project is global, it’s big.

"I can’t say what but people are going to hear about it within the next few weeks."
