Penelope Cruz supports Johnny Depp during Amber Heard defamation case

Johnny Depp’s co-star Penelope Cruz has thrown her support behind the actor during his defamation case against Amber Heard.

The Sweeny Todd star is suing his ex-wife for $50million(£40m) for defamation, after she claimed she was a victim of domestic abuse inan op-ed she wrote for The Washington Post in December 2018.

But Penelope has now written a declaration where she saidshe feels lucky to know the 56-year-old.

‘I met Johnny when I was 19 years old,’ The Blast reported her saying: ‘He was in Madrid and [director] Pedro Almodovar introduced him to me..

‘The only sentences I knew how to say in English at thattime were, “how are you” and “I want to work with JohnnyDepp”.’

The 45-year-old continued: ‘Many years have passed and I have not only made three movies with him, but I also count on him as a great friend.’

The duo starred together in the likes of Blow, Pirates ofthe Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and Murder on the Orient Express.

Penelope wrote: ‘I’ve always been impressed by his kindness, his brilliant mind, his talent, and his peculiar sense of humour.’

‘I’ve seen Johnny in so many situations and he is alwayskind to everyone around. He is one of the most generous people I know.’

The actress fell pregnant while filming Pirates of theCaribbean, to which she claims Depp was very supportive of.

‘During six months of my first pregnancy, I spent every single day with him while we shot Pirates of the Caribbean,’ she wrote.

‘My husband [actor Javier Bardem] and I will never forgetthe sweetness, protection, and kindness he treated me with during every singlestep of that process.

‘We love him verymuch and I feel lucky to have someone so special in our lives.’

She’s not the only one backing the actor, as Winona Ryder has also stated how she feels Amber’s claims against her former husband are ‘impossible to believe’.

The Stranger Things actress was engaged to Depp for threeyears in the early 90s, and just like Penelope, filed a declaration in his defence.

‘I knew Johnny very well years ago. We were together as acouple for four years, and I counted him as my best friend, and as close to meas family. I count our relationship as one of the more significantrelationships of my life,’ she wrote: ‘I understand that it is very importantthat I speak from my own experience.’

The actress continued: ‘I obviously was not there during his marriage to Amber, but, from my experience, which was so wildly different, I was absolutely shocked, confused and upset when I heard the accusations against him.

‘The idea that he is an incredibly violent person is thefarthest thing from the Johnny I knew and loved. I cannot wrap my head aroundthese accusations.’

While Heard did not name her alleged abuser, Depp filed adefamation suit, claiming that her ‘fabricated domestic violence allegationsare categorically and demonstrably false’.

In filings, Depp has accused Heard of abuse, including allegations she severed his finger with a glass bottle and stubbed out a cigarette on his face. Amber’s lawyer said: ‘This allegation is absurd, offensive and categorically untrue.’
