Ben Affleck made headlines following his candid interview on The Howard Stern Show, where the actor claimed he’d “probably still be drinking” if his relationship with the Elektra actress hadn’t ended.

However, during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the 49-year-old addressed the remark, insisting that his words were taken out of context as he would never “want my kids to think I would ever say a bad word about their mom”.

The pair share three children: Violet, 16, Seraphina, 12, and nine-year-old Samuel.

Ben continued saying that he didn’t realise how his comments had been perceived until the interview had aired — and it wasn’t long before his name began trending on social media.

He described the interview as “meaningful” and believes that listeners had “taken the conversation” and “made it seem as if I was doing the exact opposite of what I said”.

During his chat with Howard about his marriage ending, the Live By Night filmmaker found himself in hot water after insisting: “I’d probably still be drinking. It’s part of why I started drinking … because I was trapped”.

Ben now says that if people had watched the interview at full length, they would have had a different opinion of what was actually said about his split from Jennifer.

Fans were stunned by the suggestion that Jennifer was being blamed for Ben’s former battle with alcoholism, considering that she supported his many trips to rehab and was determined to help her ex-husband overcome his addiction issues even after the pair separated in 2015.

@rgay on Twitter commented on Ben’s interview, tweeting: “I was rooting for Ben Affleck but to blame his drinking on his marriage to Jennifer Garner is so silly.

“She dried his a** out multiple times! After they broke up even. Mmmmm. He best take himself to a meeting or something.”

Another social media user, @pamonahan1, echoed similar words, writing: “That’s right @BenAffleck, blame Jennifer Garner for your drinking.”

“The interview you gave for People Mag paints you as a pathetic human who takes no responsibility for their own actions. Your kids can read this you know.

“What an a** you are. Good luck JLo.”

Fans also brought up how Jennifer was left to deal with the embarrassment of finding out her ex-partner had shared a fling with the family’s nanny Christine Ouzounian, which the 13 Going On 30 actress later appeared to confirm in a 2016 interview with Vanity Fair.

Ben, who rekindled his romance with ex-fiancée Jennifer Lopez earlier this year, stressed the importance of second chances in an interview with Good Morning America, as he made another attempt to clarify his words while maintaining that the role of being a dad ultimately defines his “worth” as a person.

“I feel like at the end of the day everybody needs second chances,” Ben explained. “I don’t know anybody who does everything right. We all fail. That’s the truth.”

“There aren’t enough movies, there isn’t enough success, not enough likes on Instagram. Those things will never fill you up or make you happy,” he maintained before saying his kids personally make him whole.

“My life is better and I am happier the more I am around my kids”.

Though Ben and Jennifer have both moved on, the two are still on good terms as they co-parent their three children together.

Ben, who has been to rehab for alcohol addiction in 2001, 2017 and 2018, claims to have made a drastic change in his life by giving up the drinking, which has ultimately allowed him to be a better father to his kids.

Over the summer, the Oscar award winner was spotted house hunting with J.Lo in Los Angeles as the famous couple plan to move in together.

One of the properties they viewed was an $85 million home located in Beverly Hills, which boasts 12 bedrooms, 24 bathrooms, a basketball court, a boxing ring and a swimming pool.

The pair are still said to be searching for the right home.
