The Earl of Wessex proposed to Sophie Rhys-Jones, as she was then known, in January 1999 with a gorgeous engagement ring. The royal couple celebrated their 22nd wedding anniversary in June 2021, and have arguably been the most successful royal couples to date. Prince Edward is the only royal of his generation not to get a divorce and his engagement ring choice was an excellent pick.
Sophie’s gorgeous engagement ring was made by British royal jeweller Garrard, which is the same jewellery house that crafted Princess Diana’s iconic sapphire piece.
The Countess’s extremely elegant ring features a two-carat central oval diamond, bordered by two smaller, heart-shaped diamonds.
The Earl of Wessex chose this classic, all-diamond ring when he proposed to Sophie as he wanted a “classic and romantic design”.
The ring is set in 18-carat white gold and looks simply elegant on the Countess.
Sometimes the Countess of Wessex wears it alongside her gold wedding band.
The ring is reported to be worth somewhere in the region of £105,000.
Jaimie Mackey, a wedding reporter for Brides, said: “The silhouette of the ring is totally classic, and those heart-shaped stones are a sweet, romantic addition.”
The heart shapes are not entirely unusual for a royal engagement ring.
When Antony Armstrong-Jones proposed to Princess Margaret in 1960, he chose an engagement ring that emulated the shape of a rose as that was the Royal Princess’s middle name.
Royal engagement rings are always so exciting for royal fans, especially when they have unconventional, unique shapes.
The trilogy arrangement is also strikingly similar to the ring which Prince Harry designed for his bride, Meghan Markle in 2017.
The Duke of Sussex designed the ring with an ethically sourced diamond from Botswana and two of his late mother, Princess Diana’s rare diamonds.
Three-gem rings are very popular within the Royal Family, and Sophie’s ring made of white gold is very beautiful.
Sophie and Edward married in June 1999 at St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle, which is also where Prince Harry and Meghan Markle chose to say their vows.
More prominent royal weddings, such as Prince William and Kate Middleton’s, took place at Westminster Abbey, due to its grandeur.
A whopping 200 million viewers tuned in to watch Prince Edward’s royal wedding, where Sophie wore a beautiful Samantha Shaw dress and a breath-taking tiara borrowed from Queen Elizabeth’s private collection.
The couple have since become parents to two children: Lady Louise Windsor, born in 2003, and James, Viscount Severn, born in 2007.
The family live together at Bagshot Park in Surrey, which was in fact a wedding present from the Queen back in 1999.
The Grade-II listed building is set within 51 acres of land and has 120 rooms.
It is also located just 11 miles away from Windsor Castle, which is where the Queen has spent the majority of her time throughout the year since the coronavirus pandemic.
